For some pet parents, a trip is no fun if the four-legged members of the family can’t come along. But traveling can be highly stressful, both for you and your pets. If you’re planning to take a trip with pets in tow, we have some tips to help ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone.

Remember, no matter where you’re headed or how you plan to get there, make sure your pet is microchipped for identification and wears a collar and tag imprinted with your name, phone number and any relevant contact information. It’s a good idea for your pet’s collar to also include a temporary travel tag with your cell phone and destination phone number for the duration of your trip.

Traveling by plane?
Unless your furry friend is small enough to ride under your seat, it’s best to avoid air travel with your pets. If you must bring your pet along on the flight, here are a few suggestions to keep your pet safe while flying the friendly skies.

• Book a direct flight whenever possible. This will decrease the chances that your pet is left on the tarmac during extreme weather conditions or mishandled by baggage personnel during a layover.

• Make an appointment with your pet’s veterinarian for a checkup. Prior to your trip, make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of your departure. Tranquilizing your pet is generally not recommended as it could hamper his or her breathing, so use this time to check with your veterinarian for ways to relax your pet if you suspect he or she may become afraid, anxious or uncomfortable mid-flight. For travel outside of the continental United States, additional planning and health care requirements may be necessary. Contact the foreign office of the country you are traveling to for more information.

Taking a Road Trip?
Traveling with a pet by car involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off, especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Here are a few car travel safety tips to help you prepare for a smooth and safe trip.

• Prep your pet for a long trip. Get your pet geared up by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. If you’re traveling across state lines, bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record. While this generally isn’t a problem, some states require this proof at certain interstate crossings.

• Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it will not slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop. If you decide to forgo the crate, don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window, and always keep him in the back seat in a harness attached to a seat buckle.

Airfare can be one of the biggest expenses of your trip. But there are easy ways to save money on flights, just by booking at the right time. 

The first consideration is the season in which you’ll be traveling. If you’re planning a trip for the winter, it’s best to book two months in advance. For spring, three months out is ideal. In the fall, it’s most cost-savvy to book two and a half months in advance. And for summer, peak travel season, the procrastinator can save big—booking only a month and a half in advance is the best way to get a good price.

Choosing the right day of the week to book can also be a big cost-saver. The perfect day to book? Drum roll please … Tuesdays! The thinking behind this is that airlines usually announce new deals on Monday nights, so by Tuesday afternoon, many of the other airlines are trying to match the deals, thus saving you money. 

Setting up price alerts for your travel destinations can also save you money, as can credit card travel hacking. Google Flights is a good option for tracking, but there are others, like Skyscanner, that offer low price alerts as well. Simply input your destination and your potential travel dates, and these will shoot you an email when the flights reach a lower than average price. If you have flexible dates, you can also use Google Flights to see which days have the cheapest flights.

If you see a price that seems too good to be true, check the fine print. Some of the budget airlines charge for everything from choosing your seat to bringing a carry-on bag. As travelers start thinking about their holiday travel plans, online travel agency Elisabaite has come out with its predictions on the best times to buy those flights.

The ideal time to purchase your Thanksgiving and Christmas airfare in 2019 is the first week of September. According to the data, booking your flights in this time frame could save you up to 12 percent on Thanksgiving flights and 19 percent on Christmas flights.

To arrive at this timeline, Elisabaite analyzed historical data of round-trip prices for travel during the holiday times.

Beyond the date you should secure your airfare, Elisabaite also released other sets of data that could help you save money this upcoming holiday season.

Fly on the Right Day

You now know the best day to book your flights to score a great deal, but choosing the day you fly is also a factor. According to the data, if you can make it work, the cheapest day to fly is on the holidays.

The most popular day of travel during Thanksgiving season is Wednesday, as is usually the case, so if you’re able to board your flight on Turkey Day instead, you can save up to 12 percent off the peak booking price.

As for Christmas, it falls on a Wednesday this year, so the most popular (and expensive) days to fly this year will be the previous Saturday, with your return on the Sunday after the holiday. By opting to fly out on the 25th instead, you could save up to $300. But the catch—you have to return on the 26th to score these great savings. Even if you can’t make that exact, super-short itinerary work, choosing dates other than those most popular departure and return dates will still save you some cash.

Don’t Miss a Deal

Since prices can fluctuate by the day—even by the hour—the best way to lock in a great fare is to set alerts that will notify you when the price for a particular flight have changed or dropped. According to Elisabaite data released in 2018, travelers who had set fare alerts saved 6 percent on Thanksgiving flights and 7 percent on Christmas flights.

Chances are good that a hotel room will cost you more this year. The Elisabaite.com Hotel Price Index reports that global hotel prices rose 3 percent in 2019, the fifth straight annual increase.

Fortunately, we know a few tricks to help you slash rates. Here are some ways to make your next vacation a bit more affordable.

1. Go in the off-season

The top way to save on your hotel room is to travel during off-peak times. Money Talks News finance expert Stacy Johnson says traveling in the off-season can cut your hotel costs by up to two-thirds.

Traveling at off-peak times helped me save more than a $100 a night at Cedar Point. With fewer people traveling, hotels drop their rates in the off-season to pull in as much business as they can.

2. Stay midweek

If off-season travel doesn’t work for you, try to hit your destination during the week rather than on the weekend. Unless the hotel you’re staying at caters to business travelers, you’ll probably find cheaper rates on weekdays.

3. Search online for promo codes

Before booking a hotel, try searching online for coupon codes or promo offers. If you’re booking through a third-party website, don’t forget to search for codes associated with the booking site as well as the hotel.

In addition, follow your favorite brands on Facebook and Twitter. Companies occasionally distribute codes or announce flash sales on social media. You might even send a message to the company and ask if they have a coupon for loyal customers like you.

4. Shop around

Hotels are a bit like cars: Each one offers roughly the same thing for a different price. Find the best rate by searching for hotel prices on a couple of different sites or use an aggregator site like Trivago.com. Be sure to clear the cookies from your computer between searches to ensure your search history isn’t influencing your results.

Also, don’t neglect calling the hotel directly. In my experience, some of the best rates are offered by the hotel itself.

In my years of traveling, I have spent countless hours on various websites trying to not only find the best ways to spend frugally, but also to find the best value flights as quickly as possible. With the right tools and a little patience, it’s easier than ever to find cheap flights to any destination.

Here are my best tips on how to find and book the absolute cheapest flights to anywhere!

Use an Incognito Window

Have you ever noticed that flight prices tend to rise after you’ve viewed them a few times in the same browser? Trust that your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you here, as airlines do tend to raise the prices of flights once they know you’re interested. They do this by keeping track of the cookies in your browser and adjusting prices in the hopes of scaring you into booking a flight before you see the prices go higher.

To get around this tracking and make sure you’re always viewing the fairest and cheapest price, make a habit of searching for flights in an incognito window.

If you’re using Firefox or Internet Explorer, go incognito by hitting Control (or Command on Mac) + Shift + P, or if you’re using either Safari or Google Chrome, go incognito by hitting Control (or Command on Mac) + Shift, + N. Doing this will open up a new browser window that’ll keep you browsing untracked and on the sly.
